City View building sells for $3 million: One year since apartment closure

OMAHA, Neb. —

The City View Apartments building at 22nd and Saint Mary’s Avenue sold for $3 million in late June, according to Douglas County records.

The new owner is based in Florida. As of February, the property no longer is under receivership, Brian Koenig said. That process meant a court-appointed company managed the property after the prior owner went under.

The lower levels of the building were boarded up about a year ago after residents in more than 200 units were forced to move out last June and July.

But it took longer for support organizations to find every resident permanent housing. Tamika Mease, founder of North Omaha Community Partnership, said that day came on October 3 last year.

“I will never forget that day,” she said.

Mease said it was long, exhausting work for her, her employees, and the several other service organizations that helped.

“Emotionally and physically, it took the rest of the year (to recover),” she said.

She said it meant the organizations collaborated together better than ever.

“We actually got this friendship, sisterhood, brotherhood because we were there, boots on the ground together,” Mease said.

The City of Omaha’s Homeless Services Coordinator, Tamara Dwyer, told KETV before the closure, organizations had talked about collaborating more. It included service organizations on and off site during the closure.

“I think there should be more oversight to make sure that this doesn’t happen again,” Mease said.
