Former professional boxer Prichard Colon has died at 33, years after suffering a catastrophic brain injury during a fight.

The boxer’s father, Richard Colon, confirmed his son’s death Thursday on social media, saying in part “I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world. He is now in a better place.”

The Puerto Rican super welterweight boxer was once considered one of the sport’s greatest rising prospects.

He won his first 16 fights, including 13 by knockouts.

Colon’s career ended after he suffered a traumatic brain injury during an Oct. 17, 2015, bout against Terrel Williams in Fairfax, Virginia.

Colon complained of punches to the back of his head during the fight and later collapsed in the dressing room, requiring emergency surgery for bleeding on his brain. As a result, he went into a coma for more than 200 days.

The injury left Colon with severe, permanent neurological damage and made his case a prominent example of the dangers of illegal “rabbit punches” in boxing.
