Bruce Springsteen recently shared that his wife’s cancer is in remission.

Patti Scialfa, who has been married to Springsteen since 1991, was first diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018, PEOPLE reported.

Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer that develops in plasma cells of bone marrow, according to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

The rock icon shared the news about Scialfa while appearing virtually at the Pan-Mass Challenge in Massachusetts on Friday. The two-day bike-a-thon raises money for cancer research and raised $78 million last year.

“As you know, Patti’s been living with her multiple myeloma for over eight years, but now thankfully she is in remission,” Springsteen said, USA Today reported.

He continued: “Patti’s journey has taught us something I hope every one of us and every American can understand – medical research isn’t an idea. It isn’t politics. It isn’t a line in a budget. It’s the reason families find hope when hope seems hardest to find,” Springsteen said. “When we lose sight of that, we lose sight of one another. That’s too high of a price for anyone to pay.”

Springsteen also performed an acoustic version of “Born to Run” during his virtual appearance, according to reports.

Since its inception in 1980, the Pan-Mass Challenge has given $1.125 billion to Dana-Farber to fund groundbreaking cancer research, lifesaving treatment, and patient care.
