Chiefs rookie Emmett Johnson brings strong work ethic to Chiefs training camp

SAINT JOSEPH, Mo. —

The Kansas City Chiefs continued training camp on Sunday at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri.

It was the second day of camp for the team’s quarterbacks and rookies, and former Nebraska running back Emmett Johnson was the first player on the field for practice.

After being selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the NFL draft and participating in organized team activities, Johnson could have taken some time off. Instead, the former Husker continued working ahead of his first NFL season.

“I’m trying to be the toughest guy on the field,” said Johnson. “Just being in good shape at this level, being able to make a lot of different plays to help the team is what I take pride in. So, I was grinding my butt all offseason.”

Johnson emphasized to reporters his focus on the little details during training camp.

“At this level especially, I feel like you have to do the extra things,” said Johnson. “You got to get in the building early, you got to stay late, I feel like to be successful at this level. I’m kind of learning my routine right now.”

Johnson also remained focused in the classroom. He said he completed homework throughout the NFL combine and draft process, finishing with a 3.5 GPA.

“I’m proud of myself for that,” said Johnson. “I feel like being a student-athlete is important, not just playing the game of football.”

Full team public practices are scheduled to begin for the Chiefs on July 29.
