OMAHA, Neb. —

Omaha designates part of a street to honor former Mayor Jean Stothert.

The street will also have commemorative signs for Stothert from Douglas to Harney streets.

The city specifically chose the location for the signs next to the Gene Leahy Mall at the Riverfront and its renovations that Stothert prioritized along the initial streetcar route.

“Very proud to have this stretch at 13th from Douglas to Harney to be named after me. And I know people will look up there and go, who the hell is that? But anyway, I think hopefully they’ll recognize it was somebody that had something to do with all of this great development down here,” said Stothert.

Stothert was the first woman to be elected as Omaha mayor.

She served in the position for 12 years.
