Two Democrats seek opportunity to unseat longtime Douglas County Attorney
Both women say it’s time for new leadership.
DOUGLAS COUNTY DEMOCRATS HAVE A CHOICE WHEN IT COMES TO THE JOB OF TOP COP. SEVERAL WOMEN FACE OFF IN THE PRIMARY ON THE DEMOCRATIC TICKET FOR DOUGLAS COUNTY ATTORNEY. ONE OF THEM WILL FACE DON KLINE, A REPUBLICAN, IN NOVEMBER. HE’S HELD THE JOB FOR 20 YEARS. MICHAELA DANNERS WORKED AS AN ASSISTANT CITY PROSECUTOR IN OMAHA FOR 20 YEARS. SHE SAYS AS COUNTY ATTORNEY, WE CAN DO IT BETTER. AND WE CAN. WE CAN DO IT DIFFERENTLY. HER OPPONENT, AMY JACOBSON, HAS WORKED AS A COUNTY PROSECUTOR FOR 33 YEARS. 13 YEARS WITH DOUGLAS COUNTY. I KNOW HOW TO DO THIS JOB, AND I THINK I’M THE CORRECT LEADER. BOTH NATIVE NEBRASKANS AND ATTORNEYS HAVE A PRIORITY FOR DAY ONE. AS DOUGLAS COUNTY’S TOP COP, SAYING, THERE’S NO EASY BUTTON. DAY ONE, I’VE BEEN YELLING ABOUT IT THIS WHOLE TIME. THE JUVENILE JUSTICE CENTER. I WANT THE KIDS IN THAT YOUTH CENTER TO GET WHERE THEY’RE SUPPOSED TO BE, THE ONES THAT ARE PLACED OUT AND PLACED. SHE’S TALKING ABOUT THE VACANT 64 BED JUVENILE TREATMENT FACILITY SITTING EMPTY SINCE IT WAS BUILT IN 2023. JACOBSON WANTS TO ASSESS THE GOALS OF HER FUTURE STAFF AT THE COUNTY ATTORNEY’S OFFICE ON DAY ONE. I INTEND TO FIND OUT FROM EVERYBODY WHAT THEY WANT TO DO IN THE OFFICE. I’M GOING TO COME IN AND I’M GOING TO ASK THEM. I’M GOING TO ASK THEM WHO WANTS TO BE THE NEXT COUNTY ATTORNEY? WHO WANTS TO BE THE NEXT CHIEF DEPUTY? WHO WANTS TO BE A TEAM LEADER? I WANT TO FIND OUT WHAT PEOPLE’S GOALS ARE AND MAKE SURE I CAN SUPPORT THAT AS IT GOES ALONG. BOTH SAY THEY WANT TO TAKE A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH TO KEEPING OMAHA RESIDENTS SAFE FROM VIOLENT CRIME BY BUILDING COMMUNITY. SO I WANT US TO GET OUT OF THE BUILDING AND AND PARTNER WITH THEM IN THE COMMUNITY MORE SO THEY SEE THAT WE ARE REALLY TRYING TO DO MORE THAN JUST JUSTICE TO THEM. IT’S WITH THEM, FOR THEM, THROUGH THEM. I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH IN OUR COMMUNITY. OUR LARGEST MENTAL HEALTH HOSPITALS ARE OUR PRISONS, UNFORTUNATELY. SO WE HAVE TO DO SOME REFORMS TO DO THAT. DANNER SAYS SAFETY COMES FROM HOLDING CRIMINALS ACCOUNTABLE. I’M GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT THE HABITUAL AND VIOLENT OFFENDERS ARE GET THE PUNISHMENT THAT THEY DESERVE. I’M GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ACCESSIBLE AND AMENABLE TO DIVERSION, REHABILITATION GET THAT OPPORTUNITY. JACOBSON IS LEANING ON HER EXPERIENCE. I TRIED PROBABLY OVER 150 JURY TRIALS. I KNOW HOW TO TRY FELONY CRIMINAL CASES, BOTH TRYING TO UNSEAT FIVE TERM COUNTY ATTORNEY DON KLEINE, SAYING IT’S TIME FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT. ARE THE PRIMARIES IN 13 DAYS? MAY 12TH WILL BE HERE SOON
