Omaha, Council Bluffs offer cooling centers during heat wave
Amid a heat wave in the area this week, Omaha and Council Bluffs are opening up cooling centers to provide relief for those in need.
OMAHA, Neb. —
Amid a heat wave in the area this week, Omaha and Council Bluffs are opening up cooling centers to provide relief for those in need.
Salvation Army Omaha is offering cooling centers with air-conditioned spaces, bottled water and places to charge electronic devices during specific operating hours. They’re typically activated during times of extremely hot temperatures. Anyone in need of relief from the heat is told to stop in.

Cooling centers will be open from June 29 through July 2. Their hours will vary by location as listed below:
- Heritage Place (3612 Cuming St.) 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- North Corps (2401 Manderson St.) 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

In Council Bluffs, several locations are available to help those in need.
- New Visions Homeless Services (1435 N. 15th St.) 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- The Salvation Army (715 N. 16th St.) 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. from Monday through Thursday.
Pottawattamie County Public Health said the Micah House will not operating a cooling center, but women and families may call to check bed or room availability.
