Court documents: Photos showed dead chickens, pig and emu at Elkhorn property in animal seizure case

OMAHA, Neb. —

The man accused after the Nebraska Humane Society seized nearly 80 animals from an Elkhorn residence now faces several misdemeanor charges.

Nicholas Sakis faces 14 counts of cruelty to animals, three counts of license requirement for a dog or cat, three counts of proof of vaccination, one count of mini-pig number/size restriction, three counts of mini-pig license required, one count of animal nuisance, one count of livestock sanitary conditions, one count of unenclosed poultry, one count of unlawful possession of a nondomestic animal, and one count of failure to alter mini-pig.

The incident happened at a home earlier this month near 195th and Pacific streets, and animal control officers confiscated a variety of animals, including a zebra, emu, alpacas, ponies, donkeys, pigs, chickens, geese, and ducks.

NHS said the man had been cited a week prior to the search warrant for four counts of animal cruelty.

“Many of the animals were emaciated, lacked appropriate living conditions and some of the livestock had overgrown hooves,” according to a news release from the Nebraska Humane Society.

According to court documents, photos showed dead chickens “scattered around the property, along with a dead pig and dead emu.”

Photos also showed a horse, pony, cattle, and pigs with overgrown hooves, as well as cattle that appeared thin and undernourished, according to court documents.

Court documents stated that Sakis refused to surrender any animals needing medical care when a Nebraska Humane Society field investigator investigated the concerns.
