Creighton, Nebraska report security incident impacting learning management system
LEADER KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN AT TEN. A NATIONWIDE CYBER ATTACK TARGETS MILLIONS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS, INCLUDING MANY RIGHT HERE IN NEBRASKA AND RIGHT DURING FINALS WEEK. THANKS FOR JOINING US. I’M BILL SCHAMMERT, THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA SYSTEM, METRO COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND CREIGHTON ALL CONFIRM AN OUTAGE OF CANVAS. THE SYSTEM IS USED BY MORE THAN HALF OF ALL COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN NORTH AMERICA. KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S BETH CARLSON JOINS US AFTER SPEAKING TO AN EXPERT ABOUT WHAT’S AT RISK. BETH. BILL, AS YOU SAID, IT’S FINALS WEEK FOR MANY STUDENTS. SOME ARE PREPARING FOR EXAMS OR EVEN UPCOMING GRADUATIONS THIS WEEKEND. SO SEVERAL UNIVERSITIES IN NEBRASKA, INCLUDING CREIGHTON’S CAMPUS, SAY THEY ARE ASSESSING NEXT STEPS. WE TALKED TO AN EXPERT ABOUT WHAT’S AT RISK. NEBRASKA UNIVERSITIES ARE AMONG THOUSANDS IMPACTED BY A GLOBAL OUTAGE OF CANVAS, A LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. IT’S NOT JUST ISOLATED COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, THEY’RE BUSINESSES USING THIS PLATFORM TO FOR THEIR CONTINUING EDUCATION, FOR THEIR EMPLOYEES. GARY SPARKS IS THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR OF THE CYBER SECURITY CENTER AT METRO COMMUNITY COLLEGE. TODAY, IT STARTED OUT EVERYTHING WAS WORKING FINE. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT POPPED UP AND SAID THEY WERE UNDER MAINTENANCE. RIGHT NOW, STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF CANNOT USE THE SYSTEM AND COURSE MATERIALS, ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING FUNCTIONS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. IF IT GOES DOWN, THEN WE’RE GOING TO EXTEND DEADLINES. WE’RE GOING TO CHANGE THAT TO HELP THE STUDENT OUT. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS A HACKING GROUP, SHINY HUNTERS, IS CLAIMING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE CYBER ATTACK. THE GROUP IS REPORTEDLY THREATENING TO LEAK THE DATA IF UNIVERSITIES DO NOT PAY A RANSOM. ACADEMIC RECORD, MEDICAL RECORDS, THOSE TYPE THINGS IS WHAT THEY’RE GOING AFTER BECAUSE THEY CAN MAKE A LOT MORE MONEY OFF OF THAT AS OPPOSED TO JUST A CREDIT CARD. SPARKS SAYS STUDENTS AND STAFF ARE NOT AT RISK OF HAVING INFORMATION LIKE SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS STOLEN. HE SAYS MANY SCHOOLS HAVE SECURITY MEASURES PUT IN PLACE FOR SITUATIONS LIKE THIS. HAVING THAT MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION THAT MITIGATES IT QUITE A BIT. NOW, GRANTED, THE ATTACKERS ARE NOW TRYING TO CIRCUMVENT THAT. NOW, COMMENCEMENT THIS WEEKEND FOR UNIVERSITIES LIKE UNL AND UNO IS STILL SET TO BE ON AS PLANNED. THAT WAS CONFIRMED TODAY. NOW, WE ALSO TALKED TO CONGRESSMAN MIKE FLOOD, WHO WAS IN OMAHA TODAY, ABOUT WHAT’S BEING DONE TO PREVENT CYBER ATTACKS. TAKE A LISTEN. THE FBI HAS RESOURCES. DOES IT HAVE ENOUGH? I THINK THAT’S SOMETHING WE HAVE TO DETERMINE IN CONGRESS. EVERY DOLLAR WE PUT INTO CYBER SECURITY AND PROTECTION IS A GOOD INVESTMENT. FLOOD SAYS HE HAS A MEETING NEXT WEEK TO ADDRESS CYBER ATTACK CONCERNS LIVE ON CREIGHTON’S CAMPUS. BETH CARLSON, KETV, NEWSWATCH SEVEN. HOPEFULLY, THE GRADUATIONS ARE PROCEEDING AS SCHEDULED.
