Omaha unveils proposal for $181 million public safety headquarters near Crossroads district

OMAHA, Neb. —

City of Omaha officials revealed the design for the new public safety headquarters, which will be located near the Crossroads district.

Mayor John Ewing Jr. unveiled the design for the 275,000-square-foot facility, which will bring together police and fire administrative functions — more than 300 public safety professionals.

The proposed $181 million headquarters is planned to be more than three acres, between Cass and Chicago streets near 74th and 75th avenues.

Officials said the city will seek public approval for $155 million in bonding authority in November.

“This, combined with prior bonding authority, would reach the total. The bond would not require a tax levy increase,” the city said in a statement.

After the public vote, design is scheduled to continue into late 2027, with construction slated to start in Jan. 2028 and scheduled to be completed in spring 2030.

Officials said the facility would consolidate administrative functions for the Omaha Police Department and the Omaha Fire Department, including investigative units, a forensic laboratory, emergency medical services support, a real-time crime center, evidence processing, and more.

The facility would not serve as a police precinct or fire station, according to officials.
