Omaha broke ground today on a nearly $20 million renovation project at Lake Cunningham, located just west of 72nd Street and Interstate 680. The project will include a classroom, concessions, restrooms, a playground, a fishing pier, and a mountain bike course. Officials described the space as beautiful. “It’s not your traditional playground. It’s something that’s built into the contours of the area, has a really nature feel, pollinator areas, or have an art area. There’s just all different kinds that you can see from the renderings behind us. It’s not your typical playground that you see on an elementary school. It’s something that we feel is really special, that people are going to come and want to come and want to drive from farther distances as a destination playground, because it’s going to be really cool,” Brook Bench said. The renovated space will also be able to host weddings.
