A student died after a tree fell on a playground at a school in Melrose, Massachusetts, the city’s school committee announced Tuesday.The incident happened Monday at the Winthrop Elementary School, the Melrose Fire Department confirmed. Two other people — a student and an adult — were injured.”It is with great sadness that we share that the student who was seriously injured (Monday) afternoon during the incident on the Winthrop School playground has died. It is our understanding that the other two individuals, one student and one adult, who were injured yesterday, have been discharged from area hospitals,” the school committee posted on Facebook.The child’s name has not been released. Aerial video showed the large tree lying across a jungle gym. It appeared that the tree was once rooted behind a fence near the playground. The tree ended up crushing a portion of the fence after it fell over onto the playground.”It’s terrifying. You hope everyone’s OK. It’s really scary to get all the text messages from a bunch of moms, that’s how I heard,” said parent Robin Magnuson.Magnuson’s daughter goes to Winthrop Elementary School and said she heard the tree fall. “Loud, very loud,” Magnuson said. “We happened to see the ambulance and they were taking away the kid on stretchers.”Eda George is the president of the Upham Family Society, which preserves Melrose’s oldest colonial home. The fallen tree was on that property. George said all the trees were just checked out last week. “The tree that fell gave no indication that it was at risk for falling,” George said. It is unclear if gusty winds Monday afternoon played a role in the tree’s collapse. “It was gusty. It was definitely gusty today and it continues to be,” neighbor Nancy Clover said. “I’m just sad for this family and the child.”
