Elkhorn South hosts more than 100 young athletes at combine-style football camp

OMAHA, Neb. —

More than 100 young athletes took the field at Elkhorn South High School on Wednesday evening for the second annual Storm Summer Showcase, a free combine-style football camp designed to introduce elementary and middle school students to the Storm football program.

“One of the unique things about Elkhorn is we can’t recruit. Our kids have to live in the district to play here,” Elkhorn South quarterbacks coach Trevor Longe, who created the event, said. “One of the ways we can nurture that relationship is by providing opportunities to work with our coaches and work with our players.”

The event welcomed players entering third through eighth grade for two hours of instruction and competition alongside Elkhorn South coaches and current players.

Campers participated in NFL combine-style athletic testing, position-specific instruction and skill development drills while learning the fundamentals of the game in a team-focused environment.

The showcase has become one of the highlights of Elkhorn South’s offseason, giving the program an opportunity to connect with young athletes and their families while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship and community involvement.

“We are going to develop those kids over the ten years that we get a chance to work with them. So we know them. They know that we’re not going to recruit over them when they get to be a junior, senior, we’re going to make them the best player they can be. And, they can take that on to the next level,” Longe said.

The evening also featured appearances from former Elkhorn South standouts and current Nebraska football players Ashton Murphy and Ethan Duda, who spoke to campers about leadership, hard work and their journeys from Storm players to Huskers.

“Growing up in Elkhorn we always had a thing, ‘live here, play here…it’s important that the next generations continue to do that,” Ethan Duda said.

120 campers registered for this year’s event, making it one of the largest community outreach events on the football calendar.

While the camp focused on football instruction, coaches said the larger goal is to build relationships with local families, provide positive role models and invest in the next generation of Storm athletes.
