The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced a nationwide recall for a medication used for both dogs and horses. Samples of the medication were found to contain “glass fiber material,” leading to the recall. The affected products are Adequan Canine Injection for dogs and Adequan i.m. Injection for horses, manufactured by American Regent Inc.

Here’s a list of the recalled medicine, which was distributed to pharmacies, veterinarians, and wholesalers in the U.S. between May 2024 and January 2026.

Adequan Canine injections

  • Affected lots: 3369 and 25011
  • Strength: 100 mg/mL
  • Size: 5 mL multidose vials

Adequan i.m. injections for horses

  • Affected lots: 24416 and 25265P
  • Strength: 500 mg/5 mL
  • Size: single-dose vials

The medication is used to help treat joint problems in dogs and horses. Because it’s an injectable, it’s either given by or under the supervision of a veterinarian. Although you aren’t likely to give this medication to your pet at home, make sure to speak to your veterinarian about the recall to see if your pet’s treatment could be impacted.

Injecting medication with foreign material such as glass shards can have serious health effects for animals. The risks include irritation, swelling, inflammation, pain, and infection or the development of abscesses in animals. Fortunately, according to the FDA, American Regent hadn’t received any reports of animals being harmed by the recalled lots as of July 31.

This news follows a recall earlier in the summer on canned Pedigree dog food, which could contain sharp shards of metal and plastic. Always be careful what you give to your dog and stay on top of recent recalls to keep your pet happy, healthy, and safe.
