Firefighter from Lincoln dies from injuries sustained in Colorado’s Knowles Fire
Nathan Matthews, 43, has died from burn injuries suffered during a June 27 burnover while battling the Knowles Fire in western Colorado, becoming the fourth fatality from the incident
OMAHA, Neb. —
Nathan Matthews, 43, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died on Friday, July 24, from injuries sustained during a burnover while responding to the Knowles Fire in western Colorado on June 27.
Matthews, a member of the Rifle Helitack crew, was one of five firefighters involved in the burnover during initial attack operations on the fire. Three firefighters — Emily Barker, 38, of Clinton Township, Michigan; Nick Hutcherson, 27, of Glendale, Arizona; and Sydney Watson, 27, of Warrior, Alabama — died at the scene. Matthews had been receiving medical care for burn injuries before his death.

“This is another heartbreaking loss for our wildland fire family,” said U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy. “We mourn the loss of Nate while continuing to grieve the deaths of Emily, Nick and Sydney. Our hearts are with their families, friends, crewmates and everyone impacted by this tragedy. We remain committed to supporting those affected and honoring the legacy of all four firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.”
Gov. Jim Pillen released a statement following the news of Matthews’ passing:
“Please join Suzanne and I in lifting up the family of Nathan Matthews in prayer. The sacrifices our wildland firefighters make are real, and we mourn the loss of Nathan,” said Pillen. “We are forever grateful for his service and sacrifice. May God be with his loved ones during this time.”
Pillen ordered flags to be flown at half staff the day of Matthews interment.
A serious accident investigation team continues to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Information regarding memorial services for Matthews will be released at a later date.
