Jim Walden, former Nebraska assistant coach and Iowa State head football coach, dies at 88

AMES, Iowa —

A former Nebraska assistant football coach and Iowa State head football coach has died.

Jim Walden coached the Cyclones from 1987 to 1994.

He’s known for coaching the team to some of the biggest upsets they’ve ever had, including a win over Nebraska in 1992 and the school’s first win over Oklahoma in 29 years.

Walden also coached at Nebraska under Bob Devaney in 1969 and was an assistant on the Huskers’ 1970 and 1971 national championship teams.

He was 88 years old.
