Foster kitten with custom-made wheelchair to help him walk

A foster kitten in Cincinnati, Ohio, has stolen the internet’s heart over his unique way of getting around.

Cincinnati Animal CARE posted a photo to its Facebook page over the weekend of Gelato, a kitten who, thanks to the help of the shelter’s lead veterinary technician, can now walk thanks to his McGuyver-style setup.

“Nothing a few rulers, zip-ties, and Hot Wheels can’t solve!” the shelter said.

On Monday, the shelter posted more about Gelato’s story: When he arrived at Cincinnati Animal CARE, he was unable to stand or walk on his own. He was also too small for any of the wheelchairs available at the shelter.

That’s when lead vet tech Mallory Smith got creative.

Using cardboard, rulers, Hot Wheels and tape, she made Gelato his own custom wheelchair.

CAC says the device is already making a difference.

“Gelato is getting stronger every day and is even starting to stand for little moments on his own!” the shelter’s post says. “Every tiny step is a huge victory, and we’re so excited to watch him continue on this journey.

“Sometimes, all it takes is a little creativity, a lot of heart, and someone who refuses to give up.”

Gelato remains in foster care, being cared for by Smith, as he continues to recover.
