Nebraska voters heading to the polls for next week’s primary election will once again need to show a photo ID before casting a ballot, a requirement state and local election officials say has become routine, but still raises questions for some voters.Nebraska’s voter ID law took effect with the 2024 statewide primary and requires voters to present an approved photo ID in every primary, general and special election. Acceptable forms of ID include a Nebraska driver’s license or state ID, U.S. passport, military ID, tribal ID, and some school-issued photo IDs. IDs can be expired, as long as they include the voter’s name and photo. Douglas County Election Commissioner Danielle Jensen said one of the most common misconceptions is that an expired ID cannot be used.“Sometimes people wonder, ‘Hey, my ID is expired. Can I still use it?’ Yes, they can,” Jensen said.If a voter does not have an approved photo ID, Jensen said they may fill out a reasonable impediment certification and provide supporting documentation to verify their identity. Nebraska voters can also obtain a free state ID through the Nebraska DMV. If a voter forgets their ID on Election Day, they can leave and return before polls close or cast a provisional ballot. Secretary of State Bob Evnen said that the ballot will be held until the voter brings an approved ID to their county election office. In Douglas County, that deadline is May 19.Nebraska’s primary election is Tuesday, May 12. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters can check their polling place, registration and sample ballot online before Election Day.
