‘He lived life to the fullest’: Loved ones mourn man shot and killed

OMAHA, Neb. —

Lashawn Lessley Jr.’s family says he was sitting on the couch when someone shot through the window Sunday near 28th and Titus.

“It just all happened so fast. They came, shot through the window, and that’s all I seen,” said Cindi Bloomer, the mother of Lessley’s children.

Omaha police are still looking for the person who took Lessley’s life, a life that his family said was lived to the fullest.

“He was a family man,” Bloomer said. “He was definitely a free spirit. He went wherever he wanted to go; he lived life to the fullest.”

Lessley’s 8-year-old daughter also wanted to talk about who her father was.

“He was a great man. Great father, great father to everybody, great cousin, great everything. He meant the world to me,” Janiyah Lessley said.

As Janiyah gets ready for her first day of third grade, her light is being dimmed by the fact that she’ll no longer have her dad by her side.

“We went to get ice cream; we did everything together,” she said.

Just outside of Lessley’s home is a sign that calls for an end to gun violence. It’s a message that Bloomer echoes.

“If you have a problem or if you feel a type of way about something, it’s ok to be an adult and talk to somebody. It doesn’t always have to revolve around violence,” Bloomer said.

And she said that violence impacts more than just one person.

“When you rip something like that from a kid, you mentally mess them up,” Bloomer said. “Then you got kids growing up angry, mad at the world, hurt. He’ll [Lessley’s youngest son] never experience his dad over something that we could’ve been an adult and sat down and talked about.”
