A security guard who was shot and killed along with two other worshippers at a San Diego mosque is being remembered as a hero.Amin Abdullah, a father of eight, was shot and killed in the Monday attack, according to a spokesperson for the Council on American-Islamic Relations.“It could have been much worse had it not been for the brave actions of Amin Abdullah who did what he could to protect everyone inside and sacrifice his life in the process,” said Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the national deputy director of CAIR.Abdullah was shot and killed alongside Mansour Kaziha and Nadir Awad Monday at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Police say two teenage gunmen, ages 17 and 18, opened fire, killing the three victims before killing themselves.In a press briefing Tuesday, authorities said Abdullah played a pivotal role in keeping the shooting from being much worse.After the gunmen ran past him, Abdullah “engaged in a gun battle with these two suspects,” San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said. Abdullah then radioed in a lockdown protocol.”His actions, without a doubt, delayed and ultimately deterred these two individuals from gaining access to the greater areas of the mosque where as many as 140 kids were within 15 feet of these suspects,” Wahl said.“It’s fair to say his actions were heroic,” the chief added. “Undoubtedly he saved lives.”The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Federal officials said Tuesday that the alleged gunmen met online and shared a “broad hatred” toward different religions and races.Authorities have uncovered writings by the suspects, but declined to specify what ideologies or views were expressed by the shooters.Authorities have also recovered 30 firearms and a crossbow from two residences searched in connection to the investigation.
