Volunteers lead community initiative marking 25 years since Sept. 11 terror attacks

OMAHA, Neb. —

Kim Armstrong knows the sacrifices first responders and military members make. It’s just one of the many reasons she volunteered for Heartland Honors 9/11.

KETV is the media sponsor for the campaign. It recognizes 25 years since the Sept. 11 terror attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people.

The initiative is entirely volunteer-led and made possible through partnerships with local businesses like Mutual of Omaha and nonprofits like The Salvation Army of Omaha.

Dan Svobda works for NP Dodge and sits on the Salvation Army board. He helped other volunteers hand out yard signs at the NP Dodge Parking Lot Saturday. The event was drive-thru, making it easy for community members to take part.

The yard signs are just one way people can join Heartland Honors 9/11. The community is encouraged to take part in 11 days of service starting Sept. 1. That can take the form of donations, volunteering or small acts of kindness.
