Getting into character can be a lengthy process, and for some, it takes longer than others. KETV was able to get a behind-the-scenes look at how one actress becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.

The Orpheum Theater is home to so many stories, evoking countless feelings and emotions for audiences in Omaha. The popular musical “Wicked” is entertaining hundreds this summer.

However, before the cast is able to defy gravity, they undertake massive transformations. That rings most true for Aline Mayagoitia, who plays the green eventual Wicked Witch of the West.

“It’s a huge honor. I mean, it’s one of the most difficult roles in musical theater. It’s kind of infamously difficult. To be leading a company that has been out touring the country for over 20 years, it’s a huge responsibility, and I take it very seriously,” Mayagoitia said.

Donning the green skin is a long but simple process.

“She starts her day off with a base of primer and foundation. That leaves a coat before we put all the green on. And then from there, it’s just like basic makeup application,” the show’s makeup artist said.

For Mayagoitia, the goal of playing Elphaba is to pass on the love of theater.

“There are so many kids coming to see Wicked for the first time. My goal is that everyone who sees our show for the first time is curious to see more theater, because there is nothing better than live,” she said.
