Within seven days, but 2,000 miles apart, two people were shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
On Monday in Biddeford, Maine, a person was shot and killed in an incident involving an ICE agent. Sen. Angus King said in a statement that he was told by the Department of Homeland Security that the victim was a man in his 20s and that an ICE agent shot him. He also said DHS told him that the person killed “weaponized the vehicle.”

Last Tuesday in Houston, Texas, an ICE officer fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national who had been in the U.S. for more than 30 years. Salgado Araujo was not the intended target of the immigration operation. ICE officials have said that Salgado Araujo attempted to run over the agent with his car, but the agency has not yet provided corroborating evidence. The federal agents did not have body cameras, DHS said.
The two latest incidents are among at least 29 shootings by federal immigration officials, including ICE agents, during President Donald Trump’s second term, according to a Get the Facts Data Team analysis of data collected by the Gun Violence Data Hub.
Eight of the shootings have been fatal.
These numbers are likely an undercount, according to the Gun Violence Data Hub, as they are based on news reporting and not all shootings are publicly reported.
Additionally, others have been killed during the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement crackdown, beyond those killed in shootings.
The two killed in July are the latest fatalities of shootings involving immigration enforcement agents since two people were killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, five months ago.
Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on Jan. 7 when the officer fired into her vehicle. On Jan. 24, Alex Pretti was fatally shot while filming U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents
It remains to be seen whether the total number of shootings by immigration enforcement agents under Trump’s second term is unusual.
The latest data from DHS on its use-of-force incidents is from 2023. That fiscal year, there were five ICE incidents and 18 CBP incidents involving a firearm. The report does not specify how many victims were injured or killed.
