IndyCar race in Washington, DC: What to know

Downtown DC has been transformed into a racetrack ahead of an unprecedented IndyCar race along the National Mall.

Washington, DC has been transformed into a racetrack, where speeds could approach 200 mph during Sunday’s unprecedented IndyCar race along the National Mall.

It’s all happening in the shadow of some of America’s most recognizable landmarks, like the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument.

The race features 147 laps around a seven-turn circuit, adding up to 250 miles, a tribute to America’s 250th birthday.

It’s the second major sporting event done in coordination with President Donald Trump celebrating that anniversary, following his UFC fight on the White House grounds.

The main race is slated to start at 1 p.m. Eastern, but the fanfare kicked off earlier Sunday with a festival and flyovers.

It’s causing some disruptions to air travel, with a three-hour-long flight pause expected at nearby Reagan National Airport leading up to the event.

On the ground, security is tight, and street closures span blocks downtown.

Organizers say more than 100,000 tickets were distributed through a free lottery for Sunday’s event, which has now closed.

The event was also be broadcast live.
