Inmate accused of murder escapes Georgia jail, authorities say; search underway

ATKINSON COUNTY, Ga. —

Authorities in multiple states are searching for an inmate after he escaped from a jail in Georgia, according to the Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff David Moore said the escape happened at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday at the Atkinson County Jail. The inmate was identified as Pablo Zuriel Miranda, 32.

Miranda was arrested on May 1, 2024, and had been held without bond, authorities said. He faces felony charges of aggravated assault and two counts of murder/felony murder.

Search underway

Moore said law enforcement is throwing its full weight behind the search.

“We have every resource known to man working on this,” Moore said in a public statement, saying that multiple neighboring agencies are involved in the search.

A wanted notice released by the sheriff’s office said deputies and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are actively following leads as they worked to locate Miranda.

Public urged not to approach inmate

Authorities warned the public not to approach Miranda.

Anyone who spots Miranda is asked to call 911 immediately, or contact the Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office at 912-422-3611.

Officials acknowledged the escape may be unsettling for residents, but said deputies and partner agencies are working to safely apprehend the inmate.
