A Saunders County Sheriff’s Office drone pilot conducted a grid search, but the initial search was unsuccessful.
First responders from Valparaiso, Malcolm, and Waterloo later assisted. Authorities said sonar from a Waterloo rescue boat was used to locate the man, who was then recovered by divers early Monday morning.
The victim was identified as Derek Mueller, a Lincoln native.
The preliminary investigation indicates Mueller was swimming in the reservoir to retrieve a fishing lure, according to the sheriff’s office.
An autopsy has been ordered and the investigation is ongoing.
