An off-duty Lincoln police officer was cited on Sunday afternoon after a child was found locked in a van at Pawnee Lake.

LINCOLN, Neb. —

An off-duty Lincoln police officer was cited on Sunday afternoon after a child was found locked in a van at Pawnee Lake.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office was called just after 4 p.m. after a report of a child crying and screaming inside a van with the windows rolled up. Deputies say a woman went to the van and removed the child from the car before LSO arrived.

Sheriff Terry Wagner said deputies made contact with that woman, identified as LPD Capt. Mayde McGuire, and her partner Mary Tobiassen. They confirmed the child belonged to them and had been left in the van for a minimum of 28 minutes.

LSO alleges the couple was fishing when the child was in the van. McGuire was also found with a blood alcohol content of 0.108, according to deputies.

Wagner said both women were cited for misdemeanor child abuse.

According to the Lincoln Police Department, McGuire has been placed on investigative suspension pending the outcome of their internal investigation.
