Holmes suffered burns in June after falling into a fire pit while visiting a friend’s house.
His family told sister station KMBC’s Andy Alcock he was heartbroken that his Messi jersey was destroyed in the accident.
Holmes wished Messi a happy birthday from the hospital earlier this month.
“Messi has been a little busy with soccer, but he still managed to take the time to send Christian a personally signed jersey,” Christian’s father said in a post shared by Children’s Mercy. “Christian was elated with joy!”
The signed jersey was delivered to the hospital by Los Hornos KC, according to the hospital.
Los Hornos KC is an Argentinian restaurant that has hosted watch parties during the tournament.
In better news, the hospital also shared that Christian has been allowed to go home.
