A major golf tournament over a year in the making is likely to be postponed.The LIV Golf League may not be played in New Orleans the last week of June, according to sources revealed to Hearst sister station WDSU. An official announcement is expected Tuesday. This comes after weeks of turmoil involving the league and its financial backing. The event, which would be a first of its kind in New Orleans and City Park, is backed by the Saudi Private Investment Fund. Sources said the state of Louisiana is postponing the event until LIV can restructure financially and find additional sources of funding. The event could be rescheduled in the future. Earlier this month, questions surfaced about the future of the league for the rest of 2026. The LIV CEO assured cities and states with planned events that the 2026 season was moving forward as planned. City Park had a massive renovation to its golf course ahead of the LIV event. City Park is a state entity and received $2 million to upgrade its facilities in preparation for the tournament. Gov. Jeff Landry’s office also earmarked $3 million as a hosting fee to lure LIV to New Orleans, promising a $70 million impact during what is usually a slow summer slump for tourism. WDSU has learned that the state of Louisiana will be repaid $1 million, which the state had already paid to LIV ahead of the event, and no additional money will go towards the event at this time. It is unclear how this could economically impact the city’s tourism dollars.
