People on both sides of the Iowa and Nebraska state lines are not happy about it.

“I’m ready for this so-called war to be over so that these gas prices can come down,” Sammy Beaugard, a Nebraska driver, said.

Right now, Nebraska is seeing an average of $3.98 at gas stations, a few cents higher than the day before, which was $3.96.

“Most of western Iowa is also in that same range,” AAA Spokesperson Nick Jarmusz said.

But in some spots, drivers are feeling the state’s overall average. “$5.14 a gallon for 91 octane seems crazy,” Mark Kremmerer, Nebraska driver, said.

Iowa gas saw a 20-cent price jump from $3.94 on Monday to $4.14 on Tuesday.

“It’s like $4.29. I know, as I was leaving town this morning, they probably hadn’t changed it yet,” Billie Shelton, Iowa driver, said. “I know it was less than four.”

Jarmusz said 2022 still holds the highest record for gas prices during the start of the Ukraine war.

“Everything is going to be a lot more in the near future, so that scares the heck out of me,” Kremmerer said.

Jarmusz said that this current price surge stems from increased driving due to warmer weather, which strains supply and demand.

“Don’t think we’ll see significant relief from the prices either way until we get on the other side of the summer driving season,” Jarmusz said.

He said it’s possible to resolve this sooner. “We’d really have to see a resolution to the impasse in the Strait,” he explained.

Jarmusz said the price increase will impact people far past the pump.

“It was $2.89, and now up to almost $5 for a gallon of water. So, this is not the economy that most Americans thought they were going to get,” Beaugard said.

Jarmusz recommended people to drive the speed limit to use less fuel, utilize gas apps to find affordable prices near you and to accommodate your spending where you can.
