OMAHA, Neb. —

After Sen. Lindsey Graham’s sudden death on Saturday, local leaders in Nebraska and Iowa are reacting to the news.

Graham, a longtime Republican senator from South Carolina, who had become one of President Donald Trump’s staunchest political allies, died after a “brief and sudden” illness, his office said in a statement. He was 71.

Sen. Pete Ricketts:

“Lindsey Graham defined the word patriot. He was a strong advocate for freedom and a friend. His passion for South Carolina and the United States were unmatched. I am deeply saddened by this loss to our nation. Susanne and I are praying for his family and team. He will be greatly missed.”

Sen. Deb Fischer:

“My deepest condolences go out to Senator Lindsey Graham’s family. Lindsey was a friend, colleague, and tireless national security advocate who led in supporting and strengthening our military and our country’s defense. He will be greatly missed.”

The D.C. Medical Examiner’s preliminary findings regarding Graham’s death found “Aortic Dissection due to Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular disease.”
