On Monday, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office joined several other local organizations for a free safety event focused on the use of e-bikes and e-scooters.

OMAHA, Neb. —

On Monday, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office joined several other local organizations for a free safety event focused on the use of e-bikes and e-scooters.

The event focused on safe riding practices, current laws, enforcement and available safety resources. Local public-safety agencies also held a community question-and-answer session and demonstrated how drunk goggles affect vision and coordination.

AAA Nebraska’s Brian Ortner encouraged parents to set rules and boundaries for young riders.

“Setting those boundaries is step one,” Ortner said. “I think what parents can do to make a big impact on this topic is set those ground rules right now.”

This event comes as the DCSO is asking for the public’s help identifying a teenager who was reportedly riding an illegal dirt bike in the middle of a busy Omaha intersection.

The sheriff’s office said a citizen-submitted video appears to show the teenager riding in the middle of 192nd and Harrison streets. The video comes as local agencies and safety experts continue warning about crashes involving e-bikes, e-scooters and other small vehicles.
