Judge finds man accused of shooting Omaha police officer in the head not responsible by reason of insanity
OMAHA, Neb. —
The man accused of shooting an Omaha police officer was found not responsible by reason of insanity.

The incident happened in October 2025 outside the QuikTrip near 119th Street and West Dodge Road.

Shedrick Mills was accused of shooting Officer Steve Murcek, a 16-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department, in the head during a disturbance outside the gas station.
Murcek survived his injuries.
He was charged with attempted second-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony.
On Friday, Mills was found not guilty by reason of insanity during a bench trial.
According to court documents, “based on all the evidence adduced, there is probable cause to believe the defendant is dangerous to himself and others by reason of mental illness and will be so in the foreseeable future.”
It was ordered that Mills will undergo an inpatient evaluation at the Lincoln Regional Center, and upon completion of the evaluation, he will remain at LRC “until further order of the court.”
