Manager speaks out after $1 billion Powerball ticket sold at his store: What he said

There’s a big Powerball winner in the Midwest – a winning $1.04 billion ticket that matched all of the numbers from Wednesday night’s drawing was sold at a gas station in Quincy, Illinois.

The ticket was purchased at a Hy-Vee gas station roughly 100 miles west of Springfield in the southwest corner of the state.

Jon Marshall, who’s a manager at the store, spoke to WGEM about the big win early Thursday. He assured people that he’s not the winner.

“I’ve been up since 3 a.m., so, people calling me and texting me and things like that,” Marshall told the TV station. “So, asking me if I’m working today, but I’m here working, so definitely not the winner.”

The manager has a message for customers: “Make sure you check your tickets. You might have a surprise there.”

The winner, who has not been identified and can remain anonymous in Illinois, can choose to receive an annuitized prize of $1.04 billion paid in 30 graduated payments over 29 years, or a lump-sum payment estimated at $450.5 million. Both figures are before taxes.

Additionally, one lucky ticket sold in Massachusetts drew five of the six numbers with the Power Play multiplier, winning $2 million, and five tickets sold across four states – Arizona, California, Florida and North Carolina – won $1 million each, the lottery said.

Wednesday’s drawing was the first billion-dollar Powerball jackpot since a player in Arkansas took home $1.8 billion on Christmas Eve last year.
