Miniature horses escape and wander into road race in Vermont
Three miniature horses from Aspen East Stables in Vermont went on an adventure Saturday when they escaped from their fencing and wound up “competing” in a local road race. The small horses crossed the Browns River and made their way onto Old Pump Road in Jericho, which is around 19 miles outside of Burlington, Vermont.”They didn’t hear me coming until I was about on them, so they bolted just a little bit, and then people started corralling them,” Neil Graves from Waterbury, Vermont, said. Graves was leading the final meters of the “Pump it Up!” 5-mile race when he encountered the horses. Pictures from the Green Mountain Athletic Association President Nicholas Ponzio showed the horses running ahead of Graves. Organizers said it was a memorable community moment. “I got to send the photos to some friends who live out of state or are runners in bigger cities,” Katie Merrick said. “It made them want to come to Vermont. That’s a different type of traffic problem to have than cars and trains on the racecourse.”The horses, named Hazel, Lady Bird and Birdie, were likely on a search for more land to graze and to meet more people. “They get a lot of social interaction here,” Molly Yanus, a boarder at the stables, said. “They have never crossed the river and jumped to the other side, so this was a shock to us.”Yanus said she believes Lady Bird was the mastermind, managing to slide under the fence, with the others following suit. Neighbors on the race course helped to bring back the horses safely, but the three minis have been trying to get up to more mischief since. “Once being successful, they will definitely try it again,” Yanus said. “They actually tried it three other times. They were in timeout this morning because of their adventures.” Still, all three of the daring horses earned a ribbon from the stables for their sprint to the finish, as well as for their eagerness to make friends along the way. It’s unclear what adventures the trio will try to go on next.
