More than 940,000 bottles of heart and kidney medication recalled, FDA warns

Here’s how to tell if your prescriptions are affected — and what to do about it.

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a report warning that nearly a million bottles of medication – at least 944,142 – have been recalled nationwide.

The affected drugs include Corlanor, a medication prescribed to treat chronic heart failure, and Sensipar, a drug used to treat chronic kidney disease, among other conditions – two brand-name prescription medications made by the biotech company Amgen.

According to the FDA report, the Corlanor bottles were recalled due to the “presence of a foreign substance,” while the Sensipar bottles were recalled due to deviations from the FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations, which are used to ensure quality and safety. Both the Corlanor and Sensipar recalls are classified as Class II, which the FDA defines as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
