Nebraska blood bank battles shortages during summer months

OMAHA, Neb. —

The Nebraska Community Blood Bank celebrated its first anniversary at its second location amid blood shortages.

Friday marked the first anniversary of the Nebraska Community Blood Bank Eagle Run location — an important milestone for a key supplier of blood in our state. Officials say this location has collected more than a thousand red blood cell donations in the past year.

“We are the primary supplier for hospitals for the blood in the state of Nebraska. So, that is a very important role that we play. But we can’t do it without the community involvement,” says Corey Bianchi-Rossi, marketing director for the NCBB.

That community involvement cannot be understated for the NCBB, which has had a blood emergency twice in just the last three months — something that has not happened since the pandemic.

“This summer, it’s been a shortage all over the nation. We do have blood drives all over the state, where we try to get people to — hey, we want to make it easy for you. If there’s a company that wants to host a blood drive, we’d be happy to talk to them and then bring the blood mobile to their business,” says Bianchi-Rossi.
