Nebraska Democrats claim candidate was planted by Republicans

LINCOLN, Neb. —

The Nebraska Democratic Party claims that the former candidate currently suing it was planted in the race by Republicans.

William Forbes ran for U.S. Senate in the primary as a Democrat, and then he lost to Cindy Burbank, who has since dropped out of the race.

That leaves Nebraska Democrats without a candidate.

Forbes claims that state law requires the party to find a replacement candidate.

“It is our First Amendment right to choose the candidates we put on or not put on the ballot. It is our right to choose the coalition of voters that we go to the polling location and the coalition of voters that we mobilize to the polls. In summary, we absolutely believe that the lawyers that we have on this case will be victorious in the courtroom,” Forbes said.

Nebraska Democrats once again accused Sen. Pete Ricketts and Nebraska Republicans of planting Forbes as a “Democrat by name only.”

In a statement, Ricketts’ campaign said the issue is a matter for the Nebraska Democratic Party.

“A Democrat is suing the Democratic Party for the right to vote for a Democrat. That is a problem within the Nebraska Democratic Party,” Max Oberg, Ricketts’ deputy campaign manager, said.
