OMAHA, Neb. —

The Nebraska Department of Transportation plans to close a stretch of I-80 Monday night.

Starting at 10 p.m. on Monday, July 20th westbound I-80 from 42nd to 84th Streets will close. On-ramps at 42nd, 60th and 72nd Street will close as well. This is expected to be in effect until 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Closures/detours for overnight Monday, July 20th

For detours, westbound traffic will be detoured to 60th Street to get to L Street, where drivers can then head west.

This is for removal of an emergency dynamic message sign, the overhead message boards. The work is expected to take two nights.

On Tuesday, July 21st, eastbound traffic on I-80 will be impacted.

Starting 9 p.m. on Tuesday eastbound I-80 will be closed from 84th up to 72nd Street. The 84th Street on-ramp to eastbound I-80 will close. This is expected to be in effect until 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Closures/Detours for overnight Tuesday, July 21st

For detours, eastbound I-80 traffic will be detoured to 84th Street, then south L Street, east to 60th Street, then north to get back on I-80.

Reason for Overhead Sign Removal

KETV asked The Nebraska Department of Transportation why it planned to remove the overhead message board.

NDOT said a truck fire from July 9th is why.

The truck that caught fire pulled over underneath the overhead sign which caused extensive damage. NDOT decided to remove the message board and overhead sign as soon as possible due to this.

There are plans to replace both, but NDOT said that timeline is typically 6-8 months.
