Nebraska legend Tom Osborne becomes first living inductee into state hall of fame

LINCOLN, Neb. —

Nebraska legend Tom Osborne was unanimously inducted into the state hall of fame Wednesday.

The Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission voted in Osborne, who served as a congressman, the head coach of the Husker football team, and Nebraska athletic director.

Osborne’s induction is possible after a change to state law following a push from Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen.

“Tom Osborne has had to walk as a constant public servant. His love of Nebraska and the people of Nebraska and what he’s done for Nebraska is just absolutely second to none. And that we’re able to recognize him is a really, really special day,” Pillen said Wednesday.

The Nebraska Legislature passed a bill during this spring’s session allowing for Osborne’s induction. Previously, state law required inductees to have passed away 35 years before induction.

He is the first living Nebraskan to be inducted into the state’s hall of fame.

“Our state is indebted to Coach and all the great things he has accomplished during his lifetime,” Pillen said in January.
