The NU Board of Regents has approved the “Big Red Rebuild” plan for Memorial Stadium Friday afternoon. People got the chance to comment before the vote. NU President Dr. Jeffrey Gold commented on the project Friday morning. He called the “Big Red Rebuild” a “fan-driven, once in a multi-generational investment that modernizes Memorial Stadium while preserving its legacy, ensuring that it remains a premier destination for college athletics and other year-round events.” “This project also has intended goals to strengthen Nebraska’s ability to attract top-flight student athletes, compete at the highest level and generate even more significant economic impact across the city, the region and the state,” Gold said. The NU system president also wanted to clarify they dollars used for the project will not rely on taxpayer money or tuition-generated funds. After Gold spoke, members of the public had the opportunity to voice their support or opposition. Long-time season ticket holder Dan Wengert said he supports the renovations, but he called on the regents to wait until Nebraska Athletics shared more information.”We want to be here for it and watch it happen in our seats. We’ve had for 70 some years,” Wengert said. “The full and immediate disclosure of all the donor requirements before this is approved is the fiscally responsible thing to do.”The only dissenting voice on the board was UNMC Student Regent Brock Calamari, who called to table the motion.”This project will be an inflection point,” he said. “For the first time, we are substantially reducing capacity. That focus is shifting from being accessible to the most fans possible, to maximizing the revenue per fan.”Other regents discussed the need for work on the bones of the facility, especially in its accessibility.Make sure you can always see the latest news, weather, sports and more from KETV NewsWatch 7 on Google search.NAVIGATE: Home | Weather | Local News | National | Sports | Newscasts on demand |
