An objection has been filed against a proposed constitutional amendment that could appear on Nebraska’s November ballot

LINCOLN, Neb. —

An objection has been filed against a proposed constitutional amendment that could appear on Nebraska’s November ballot, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

The Protect Nebraskans’ Initiative and Referendum Powers Constitutional Amendment would limit lawmakers’ ability to change laws approved directly by voters.

Former state Sen. Curt Friesen and current state Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh jointly filed the objection. They argue the petition violates Nebraska’s constitutional requirement that ballot measures address only a single subject.

Secretary of State Bob Evnen will make an initial determination on whether the objection has merit and whether the initiative should be certified for the ballot.

County election officials are still validating signatures for the petition.

“I will likely be announcing my decision on whether the petition meets the single subject requirements before the validation is entirely complete in order to ensure that deadline can be met,” Evnen said.
