The Well-Read Women of Omaha book club, founded in 2018, has created a safe space for women to connect, share their love of reading and celebrate each other’s lives.“I was looking for a group of folks to connect with. It was during my postpartum,” said Dasia Horne, the club’s organizer. Horne explained the importance of the club for Black women in Omaha. “Sometimes you can feel not connected as much, and having that space for us to talk, learn, digest and reflect, it’s just ultimately a safe space,” Horne said. For member Demetrius Siller, the club has been a source of comfort. “It’s a good therapy session most of the time. I’ve been — I think the book club now, it’s going to be seven years or something like that,” Siller said. Siller, who works in the tech industry, shared how the group allows her to be her authentic self. “I work for a software company, so tech, lots of men. I have to sometimes, I wouldn’t say change because I really try to show up authentically everywhere I am, but I do have to maybe quiet some parts of me,” Siller said. She added, “I can laugh as loud as I want, I can say something crazy, and these women truly understand exactly what I’m saying, and there is such comfort in that.” The club’s activities extend beyond reading.“We’ve had a book fairs, created Little Free Libraries, donated different books. We are really trying to restore literacy within the Omaha sector in the most coolest way possible and in a community way as possible,” Horne said. The group also celebrates milestones in its members’ lives. “We’ve had women graduate from with their master’s degrees and their bachelor’s degrees, and I can’t tell you how many babies we’ve had in book club and weddings,” Horne said. Through their shared love of books, the women have built a community that thrives on laughter, connection and mutual support. “Public service announcement: Read a book!” Siller said, laughing.
