A lithium battery sparked a house fire early Friday morning in Northwest Omaha. Battalion Chief Chad Kinney said the homeowners were charging a lithium battery pack for a cellphone in the garage. He said while those portable charges are generally safe, he doesn’t recommend they stay plugged in overnight. Battalion Chief Kinney said when his crews got on scene near North 108th and Nicholas streets, around 3:45 a.m., the fire had already spread to the back deck and parts of the house. “We were fighting fires in several locations at the same time but the crews did a great job of splitting up and everybody had their responsibilities and took care of it and got the fire out,” said Kinney. It took crews about 45 minutes to get the fire under control. Battalion Chief Kinney said the two people inside the home were able to get out safely. The Red Cross is helping them find another place to stay since the house was deemed unlivable.
