‘Amazing young man’: Omaha hockey community honors 11-year-old killed in scooter crash

BENNINGTON, Neb. —

The Omaha hockey community wraps its arms around the family who lost 11-year-old Logan Rahn.

The boy died days after a crash in Bennington.

KETV NewsWatch 7 spoke with Rahn’s hockey coach to learn about the type of kid he was on and off the ice.

Rahn’s coach, Steve Jasa, said the Moylan Ice Plex is where the team would practice and play during the hockey season.

He said Rahn always brought the energy and laughter to the game.

“Logan had a smile that could light up a locker room and make all of his teammates laugh and giggle,” Jasa said. “Just an amazing young man.”

Jasa said he coached Rahn for one season; “We won the championship. So, they had fun.”

But he said it was more than the win that sticks in his mind when he thinks of Rahn.

“His legacy is bigger than hockey,” Jasa said. “Hockey is just part of his extended family, as we call it. But his legacy will live on based on his smile and how he treated people.”

Jasa said when he learned the news, he was heartbroken. His son Jayce was a close friend of Rahn’s.

“They were both really excited about having an opportunity to play together again,” Jasa said.

Last Tuesday, those plans changed for the two of them. Rahn was in a crash involving his scooter and a car at 179th and Island Circle that put him in critical condition. He was not able to survive.

The Douglas County Attorney said the driver in the crash will not face charges.

Jasa wants Rahn’s legacy to shine through all of this.

“Logan had endless potential,” Jasa said. “He was kind to everyone. People were drawn to him. He had endless potential on the ice.”

Over the past week, the hockey community has shown up on social media and with their sticks to show support.

“We have something we call sticks out in hockey,” Jasa explained. “So, when there’s somebody in need or prayers needed, we asked the hockey family or the Omaha community … to put sticks out and prayer and hope for these families.”

Jasa said with permission from Rahn’s family, the Omaha Hockey Club is working to create memorial helmet stickers.

The community also engraved a picture of Rahn in his hockey gear on Tumblrs to honor him.
