An Omaha man is facing a felony animal cruelty charge after investigators say he beat his dog and duct-taped her mouth shut inside an apartment near 22nd and Leavenworth.PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Omaha man arrested after dog found with mouth duct-tapedAccording to court documents, Omaha police and Nebraska Humane Society responded to an apartment near 22nd and Leavenworth on April 6 after a neighbor reported hearing a dog yelping like “she was being killed.”When officers arrived, investigators say they found a dog named Angel tethered to a bedpost with duct tape tightly wrapped around her muzzle.Court records say Angel’s owner, 42-year-old Jermaine Pearson, admitted he was “punishing” the dog for chewing on wooden trim near his bed. Investigators say Pearson told them he duct-taped the dog’s mouth shut to keep her quiet.According to prosecutors, the tape was wrapped so tightly that Angel could barely open her mouth.Investigators later found Angel had swelling and redness around her ears, extensive bruising, puncture wounds and injuries across her body that prosecutors said were consistent with repeated abuse.Nebraska Humane Society Executive Vice President of Field Operations Steve Glandt called the treatment “inhumane” and “cruel.”“That is just no way, shape or form a way to control an animal,” Glandt said.Nebraska Humane Society took custody of Angel and another dog from Pearson’s apartment. Officials say both animals are now recovering.Pearson appeared in court Thursday and waived his preliminary hearing. A judge ordered the case bound over to district court and set bond at $50,000.If released, Pearson is prohibited from possessing or keeping animals. According to court documents, Omaha police and Nebraska Humane Society responded to an apartment near 22nd and Leavenworth on April 6 after a neighbor reported hearing a dog yelping like “she was being killed.”
