COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa —

An Omaha man took a plea deal and was sentenced on Tuesday in an abuse case from Council Bluffs.

Nicholas Channell, 42, was found guilty of felony domestic assault. That charge was downgraded from first-degree kidnapping.

Channell was also found guilty of first-degree harassment. He had first-degree sexual abuse and willful injury charges dropped as part of that plea deal.

According to court documents, officers were called to a home in Council Bluffs in May on the report of an assault.

The victim on scene told investigators the incident started the day before when she had gotten into an argument with Channell. He allegedly picked the victim up and carried her to a bedroom, where he began choking her until she passed out.

Channell was sentenced to five to seven years behind bars on Tuesday, but that sentence was suspended, and he will now serve two years of probation.

Following that ruling in Pottawattamie County, Channell was booked into Sarpy County Jail on an outstanding warrant for third-degree domestic assault causing bodily injury.

According to the Sarpy County Attorney’s Office, because Channell’s sentence in Pottawattamie County didn’t include immediate incarceration, authorities in Iowa honored that warrant.

Channell appeared in court Friday and was held on 10% of $1 million bond. His Sarpy County case will go to trial.

A warrant was also served on Channell in Sarpy County for an alleged probation violation relative to a previous domestic violence conviction, the Sarpy County Attorney’s Office confirmed.
