Omaha orthopedist share tips on how to prepare children to handle backpacks
OMAHA, Neb. —
Back-to-school preparations aren’t just about supplies and schedules. Doctors say parents should also make sure their kids are physically ready.
This includes making sure backpacks aren’t too heavy.

“If you don’t absolutely have to have it and it doesn’t have to come home or you don’t have to take it from home to school, try and limit the amount that’s going into the bag in the first place. Like, obviously you want to bring that extra sweatshirt or things along that line, but you want to be smart about it,” said Dr. Justis L. Stolz, MD, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
He also recommends putting the heaviest items closest to the child’s back, using both straps and leaving out anything they don’t need.
If a child starts complaining of back or shoulder pain, that could be a sign their backpack isn’t fitting properly.
