Omaha police identifies officer involved in deadly shooting

OMAHA, Neb. —

Omaha police identified the officer involved in a deadly shooting.

The incident happened on June 11 in the area of 55th and Pine streets.

INITIAL COVERAGE: Omaha police says man was killed following gunfire exchange with officers

Officers were called to the area for a welfare check of a suicidal party, and shortly after they arrived a man, identified as 44-year-old David Asbury, fired a gun from inside the residence toward three officers.

OPD said Asbury exited the residence and shot two more times at officers.

One officer, identified as Robert Book, returned fire. Asbury fell to the ground and was later declared dead at the scene.

OPD said a firearm was recovered next to Asbury’s body.

Officer Book is part of the Uniform Patrol Bureau and has served the community for nine years.

This case will be presented to a grand jury once the investigation is complete, per state law.
