There is a new chapter in the Omaha Public Library’s Summer Reading Program.

It’s inviting book lovers of all ages to ‘Unearth a Story’ by digging into a new book this season.

“We’ve done this every year for over a hundred years, and we’re encouraging kids to keep reading over the summer,” said OPL’s Program Manager Nancy Novotony.

She sat down with KETV Newswatch 7’s Waverle Monroe to discuss the event, which runs through July 31, 2026, and features a lineup of prehistoric-inspired programming focused on dinosaurs, paleontology, and geology.

“It’s not just reading, it’s math, it’s science, it’s every subject in school,” Novotony said.

Participants can pick up a Summer Reading Program tracker at any OPL branch to record their reading progress. Then they track every hour spent reading or completing suggested library activities. Once a tracker is complete, it can be returned to any OPL help desk for a prize.

“If you’d rather listen to an audiobook, that counts, too,” Novontony added.
